The Research Institute for Aquaculture No.1, was established in 1963 with the aim to develop the culture techniques of freshwater species and to make survey and evaluation of the freshwater resources. For over 40 years of development, RIA 1 has gone through many difficulties and has now become an institute that plays an important role in aquaculture development. Until now, the institute still remains as a multifunctional institution associated with research, technology transfer and training and education in aquaculture and resource protection. There are 17 functional departments and centres and 1 sub- institute under RIA 1. At present, RIA 1 consists of 391 staff, of which 15 have Ph.D. degrees, 50 have M.Sc. degrees and 182 have B.Sc. degrees. Most of the younger staff has professional knowledge in aquaculture and related fields. About 77.4% of staff can communicate in English at least at immediate level. Over the past five years, RIA 1 has conducted more than 100 national and international research projects, combining basic and applied researches in order to have quick approach to production. Thus the research results have been applied into production in marine fish and mollusc culture technique, mono-sex tilapia production, cold fish culture techniques. Research on environment and socio-economics have contributed to determining the livelihood for farming communities in different areas.
